“This kind of clinic will be so helpful for our population,” Jean-Pierre said.

The Infant and Maternity Wellness Clinic will be built on donated land and become the first piece of a village project that is expected to include houses, schools, shops and recreation areas in the port city of about 40,000 people.

“By the grace of God, everything comes together with the right timing,” said Nadiv Shapira, a thoracic surgeon and president of the Haiti Delaware Alliance Foundation that is coordinating construction of the clinic.

The $250,000 facility will not require much equipment, Shapira said, so it can begin operating quickly. Much of the money already has been pledged.
