It was in Memphis Wells began her career as a journalist; she was a co-owner and editor of the The Free Speech, a local black newspaper. Through her editorials written under the pseudonym “Iola,” she denounced violence against black people and the overall injustices of Jim Crow. Wells was forced to leave Memphis for Chicago after a mob destroyed her newspaper, in reaction to her editorial reproaching white men for baseless accusations of black men raping white women. | The Haitian Times
